Actually, Wilder does offer a pretty good cast, as we get some skilled performers here. Wilder adopts many of the same characteristics of Animal Bouse, but it lacks the most important: talent. He starred as one of the leads in 1978’s Animal House, still arguably the ultimate “college party movie”, and Wilder clearly wants to walk in its path. The presence of Matheson should give a better hint at Wilder’s ambitions. That synopsis leaves the impression that Wilder will offer a bittersweet, introspective tale ala The Graduate, but that doesn’t ring true.

Combined with a series of investigative articles by college reporter Gwen Pearson (Tara Reid), Van finds himself forced to deal with reality. Vance finally decides enough is enough and cuts off his son’s gravy train. Supported by his wealthy father Vance (Tim Matheson), Van enjoys his seventh year as an undergrad at Coolidge College, where he does little more than party and carouse with a variety of sexy young women. Van Wilder (Reynolds) lives the life of the eternal college student. Reynolds has talent, so it’d be a shame if he’d been mainly associated with this awful film forever. It’s good that Reynolds was able to escape the shadow of Wilder. It really took 2016’s Deadpool to elevate him to “A-list” status. While Reynolds became a star of sorts, his movies didn’t do much – at least those in which he starred. He took this opportunity and parlayed it into… not much.
